Ware, and therefore you, don't understand how SOF operates with indigenous forces. An Iraqi Army BN has between 500-700 soldiers. IIRC there were 11 involved in the operation. Green Berets usually operate in small groups of 12 men. If by "lead" the reporter means out in front, aggressively assisting the Iraqi leadership conduct offensive operations...well that's the nature of Green Berets. They advise and teach by doing.

The Iraqi Units were "Leading" the operation in military terms, as the Regular Coalition units were in a supporting role, following behind in case the Iraqi units bogged down or got into more than they could handle. The Special Forces were there to keep things moving and hold their Iraqi counterpart's hand. So yes you could say the Iraqi forces were leading the assault...just with US training wheels.

Around here we call that knowing what we are talking about.
