"The Daily Show" having a band on doesn't have much to do with them selling out or not.

As far as the White Stripes are concerned, I do think they've been over-hyped and they don't really do all that much for me in general (although "Seven Nation Army" is a great song IMHO), I don't think they've particularly changed their style to become popular. They're still a pretty raw, basic sounding band.
And doing a commercial to promote your own album doesn't bother me as much as bands (*cough* The Who *cough*) who let what seems like their entire catalog be used to sell other products. (And yeah, I know there are situations like John Fogerty's where the songs being used in commercials are out of their control, but I know this isn't the case for many).
