11. Kerry became a lightening rod for unresolved conflicts about Vietnam
We saw them play out during the election, and though it seems crazy to us that anyone could compare Kerry's military record unfavorably to Bush, many did. What they really hate about him is that he spoke out against the war. The Republicans despise the 1960s and the changes they brought about in American society. They can't face the fact that we made a tremendous blunder in Vietnam (if they did, they wouldn't be supporting the Iraq war now) and a number even contest the fact that we lost the war. Kerry became a symbol for all kinds of unresolved conflicts in American society over political and cultural changes since that era.

That's my theory.
