Kissinger and Arafat are good examples of that type of shortsightedness. As is Begin and many others.

In Carter's case he was awarded the prize for decades of humanitarian service. Some, usually right wingers, will denigrate it by saying that it was a slap at Bush. Nevertheless his work did merit this type of award and I praise him for it.

I'm not all that big a fan of awards myself but I was happy to see that one.
