I read this on the way to work (took the bus today) and couldn't believe it. How is this guy not in jail anyway?

A man jailed for killing his own daughter has been picked to represent New Zealand at the biggest event in world sport, despite concern about the message it sends.

Soulan Pownceby was named on Monday as the only boxer in the Olympic team for Athens.

In 1995, Pownceby, who then went by the surname Rikihana, was convicted of manslaughter of his five month old daughter Jeanette. He was originally charged with murder, but had it downgraded

But One News understands the boxer has seven other convictions, the most recent for assaulting a woman just four years ago.

Women's refuge spokeswoman Sheryl Hann is shocked by the decision.

"I think it is really shocking, shameful and appalling that a man with convictions for abuse of women and for killing a child has been chosen to be a representative of New Zealand.
