I'd have to say that it was probably the Simpsons that ended up breaking down the most barriers for the acceptance of cartoons as being more than children's fare in the U.S. during the last 10 years. Pixar's films have also helped.

The rest of the world seems to have no problems with the art form, just our stuck-up society. Comic books have faced the same struggles too, but they're slowly gaining critical acceptance here thanks to writers like Gaiman and Moore.
