2. Go to toshiba's site and lookup your model.
It's possible that your memory slots are filled, so to upgrade, you would have to buy two 512MB chips to upgrade to 1024 (meaning you have two 256 chips filling the slots (or if you have more slots, some combination that fills the slots). However, it's also possible that you have one 512 chip and an empty slot where you can put another to upgrade to 1024.

If you bought the computer without customizing it, the toshiba site should have the exact specifications for what it came with and how to upgrade.
