44. It's for identifying purposes, and it's really useful...

Think about a bunch of kids who all have exactly the same iPod. The only way to tell them apart is by some sort of marking. Also, it makes it less valuable to would be thieves - less sellable.

Think of it as a high tech way of your mom sewing your name in the collar of your jacket.
