59. my phone right now is a nokia - a little bigger than the newer phones
a few weeks ago i asked at radio shack about getting a new battery for it.
they said that it would cost $60 to replace the battery! when cvs had a
sale for a new phone (a motorola - newer and smaller) at $19.99 - i
picked one up. i've had the nokia for over a year, and the battery still
works (knock wood) but when it goes i'll transfer my minutes to the new phone.
they let you keep the number.

the one thing nobody has mentioned is that, if you lose the phone, you lose
the minutes! if you're the kind of person who loses things a lot, it might
not be a good choice for you.

when we were moving from nj to fl i used the phone a lot. it was expensive,
but not compared to hotel phones or payphones ($1.40 to call across the street -
when you can FIND ONE!) i had no problem with connections during that time.

if i wasn't concerned about microwaving my brain, i'd use the cell phone
exclusively! southern bell hits us for $70 a month for basic landline and
internet. i can understand why people would ditch the landlines (although
when the power goes out, you're glad to have a corded phone.)

all in all, it's a great option for folks who just want a "get in touch in an
emergency" kind of phone. that's what i tell my folks - call me on the
landline if it's not an emergency. course, it tends to make you alarmed when
you do hear the cell phone ring -- eek, an emergency! just my neurosis, i guess
