20. That's pretty good for one year playing

But for competitive HS golf it is not so hot, borderline. If the team were bigger or there was a JV team, sure. I started at 12, my best friend and next door neighbor's dad was a frustrated golfer. Tried to qualify for his PGA card but ended up a car salesman. He built a putting green in his back yard. My parents got me a yearly pass at the municipal local course and we'd play 36 every day. By the time I got to HS I was shooting in the low 80's consistently but back then golf was a spring sport and my first love was baseball. All the kids I played with made the golf team.

Good suggestions upthread, work on the short game, that's where all the strokes are. Par on any given hole is figured as the number of shots to get to the green and then add 2 putts. For instance a par 4 you should be on the green in 2 and 2 putt for a par. Therefore on a par 72 course, half the strokes are putts in theory.

If he doesn't make the team, he could ask the coach if he could be team manager or scorekeeper or help in some way. That way he can hang with them, learn the ropes, maybe get some practice and instruction, keep his name in the coach's mind for next year and ya never know, one of the 11 could get hurt, get bad grades, move, etc. At 15 he is either a frosh or sophomore, he has another 2 or 3 years to go.
