4. I don't do that any more
Several years ago, I told a co-worker who was an ardent Pink Floyd fan that I was a personal friend of Roger Waters. It was just a flippant, sarcastic remark but his eyes widened incredulously and he said, "Really?!"

So I casually remarked, "Yeah, I wrote him a letter and he wrote back and one thing led to another and we became friends."

Never in a million years did I expect anyone to actually believe such a ridiculous thing but he did. And I thought it was kinda funny and played along.

However, it became this enormous and strange burden because this guy became so invested in the idea that I was personal friends with his idol that he would pester me constantly about "what's Roger up to these days" and "is Roger touring this year" and "will you be getting backstage passes to his show." It sort of grew way out of proportion to the original silly remark and I have regretted it ever since. And it reached a tipping point beyond which I was afraid that if I admitted the truth, it would destroy him emotionally (he was rather a fragile type).

He no longer lives in the area, I no longer have contact with him, and I will never, ever again get myself in that type of situation!
