4. Anecdote from a TV series
Edited on Sun May-02-10 04:41 PM by supernova
This was a memorable one for me. And it may be in the books, too.

In the series, "Sharpe" Episode "Sharpe's Rifles," his lady love, Comendante Teresa comes to understand Sharpe is having trouble establishing rapport with the men in his new command. She tells him, and I'm paraphrasing:

"You see, we have two ears but one mouth, so a good leader will listen twice as much as he shouts."

edit: Most of the series is over at YouTube. I'll see if I can find the clip.

edit2: It's part 5 This whole section is about him learning to get along w/ his men. That quote starts around 7:55.
