The idea was tested at MIT to check if was really possible that Archimedes did was the legends claimed.

An army that ran on solar electricity today wouldn't get very far. Almost all of the energy produced by solar electricity is consumed to run websites saying how great solar energy is. Very little is left over for any other purpose. Therefore solar energy his harmless in the military sense.

It is not socially harmless, since it encourages the kind of talismanic wishful thinking that leads to undue complacency. This complacency causes death and injury by allowing the extremely status quo to exist while people wait, Estragon-like for the grand solar future that never comes.
