61. It's called DIPLOMACY -- don't you get it?
He thought they were all adults there. He thought (and if you read his hour long floor speech before his vote I shouldn't have to repeat this) that he made it clear that he was voting for BACKBONE not for WAR! He was voting to give the authority once everything else had been exhausted. Bush took that vote as a MANDATE (see a pattern here) and ran with it. Bush is the unstable one here, the untrustworthy one here, the maniac here,... not Kerry. Kerry was very clear on his intentions with his vote.

Just as many of the dems voted to confirm Rice even though they had strong reservations (hummmm - Bidden and Dodd come to mind), they were allowing Bush to sink or float his own ship. It is "tradition" and if Kerry were looking to do the politically expedient thing, that's how he would have voted too. Did you even listen to what Kerry said during those two days of hearings? Did you hear what he said before he voted? Or were you just waiting to see what color smoke rose from the chimney (as in, how he voted)?

A man's a man who looks a man -- right between the eyes. That is what Kerry did with that vote. He looked Bush right in the eyes and said "Not this time buddy ... fool me once , shame on you ... fool me twice, shame on me ... and I won't humbly do your dirty work this time, in the name of tradition."

Stop crying in your cups for goodness sakes. Show a little back bone ... you certainly are expecting no less from Kerry. Now begin to expect that from yourself too. We are on the upside now. If we stop trying to tear each other apart, we could really make some changes happen. Rome wasn't built, nor did it fall, in one day or with one action. It took many, many actions to make both happen.
