26. Actually it's just the opposite....
If Bush had done the things earlier in his presidency that WOULD have angered his base, he would be a very popular president right now. Let's make a list of them:

--refused to invade Iraq, thereby saving millions of $ in taxpayer funds now going into the pockets of Halliburton et al.;
--appointed smart, accomplished, fair minded Supreme Court justices rather than ideologues who are also sexist, and logically challenged;
--taken a strong stand on hiring the best qualified people regardless of religious or political background;
--come out strongly pro abortion rights, saying he sees no need to change Roe v. Wade and won't consider it further;
--kept the budget balanced by not giving huge tax breaks to zillionnaires, involving us in Iraq, etc.

and so on. Yeah, his base would be furious, but the majority of voters in this country would cheer him on.

It's too late now for him to make a credible U turn.
