9/13/2007 4:20:47 PM The California Legislative Black Caucus endorsed Sen. Barack Obama of Illinois for president on Thursday, calling him "the only candidate that can unite people to get things done."

"It is imperative that we choose the candidate who is committed to addressing the disparity gaps that exist in our communities," Assemblywoman Karen Bass, the Los Angeles Democrat who serves as vice chairwoman of the eight-member caucus, is quoted by the Associated Press as saying.

"We believe that Sen. Obama is that person, and we will work together to galvanize the black community to be part of the political process by getting involved in it," she said.

Obama has also received support from L. Douglas Wilder, who in 1989 became the nation's first elected black governor.

Wilder, now the mayor of Richmond, said in a recent interview with The Politico that he doesn't think Obama “would be an easy target for the Republicans” and he could additionally loosen the Republican Party's grip on the South.
