Barack Obama and the Fight Against Breast Cancer [View All]

Allow me to introduce myself:



My name is Rebekah Gee and I am an Obstetrician/Gynecologist at the University of Pennsylvania and have been working on the Obama campaign. I want to talk about why Barack Obama will be an advocate for women with breast cancer, and will help us take research and treatment for breast cancer to a new level. I also want to tell you why I volunteered for the Obama campaign and why I think he is great for women. First, let me explain what breast cancer means to me.



When I was sixteen years old, my mother died of breast cancer after a long battle with the disease. She was an amazing woman, incredibly courageous, but also an advocate for others with breast cancer. She wrote a book called The Light Around the Dark about her experience with cancer, and wrote letters to me for my birthdays that I opened each year after she died until last year. She taught me to fight for what I believe in.



This past week, my husband Alan ran the Nationwide Better Health Columbus Marathon in her honor, and we are raising money for a center for breast cancer survivorship that we are hoping to name after my mother, Elizabeth.






Breast cancer has touched my life in a very personal way and that experience is what drove me to become a physician and a woman’s doctor and what drives my advocacy work. My mother taught me that the most rewarding part of being touched by cancer is to try and effect change on the lives of others. She always stood by her values and was good for her word.



Just like my mother Elizabeth, Barack Obama is an honest, straightforward person who means what he says. He has been a force of light in a government that in the past few years has been shrouded by the darkness of deception. He has stood by his word and delivers on his promises.



Obama believes that we need to change the way that government runs, and bring back the science into medicine. He believes that government should be accountable to the people, not work for its own partisan interests. With Obama as president, we will see a renewed commitment to research on women’s health and through that commitment, come closer to a cure.



Breast cancer will always be part of my life. But through devoting my life to advocating for women and promoting their health I can help fight the disease. Barack Obama is my candidate because I believe he is willing to stand up for what he believes in and will stand up for women’s rights consistently and honestly, every hour of every minute of every day.
