It came to light March 16 that many of the geological documents, the "sound science" that proved to Washington officials that Yucca Mountain would be safe, may have been fabricated. Energy Secretary Samuel Bodman and Charles Groat, the head of the U.S. Geological Survey, revealed that a worker had indicated, through e-mail messages between 1998 and 2000, that the documentation and geological studies done to prove Yucca Mountain a safe repository were made-up.


As a result, every court case and every decision previously made in Washington involving Yucca Mountain will not be accurate, Porter told a UNLV journalism class Thursday.


"The sound science argument Washington is using will be out the window," he said.


The possibly-fabricated geological studies tracked the path of surface water that ran through the mountain and predicted what path the water would take in the future. Climate change was a factor in the research. The geological studies "proved" to scientists and government officials that ground and surface water running through Yucca Mountain would not be contaminated by the nuclear waste housed inside. The findings were at the core of the reasoning that supported the decision to allow the project to continue.
