3. Using melamine as a substitute for wheat gluten is an "open secret" in China...
according to an article in the N.Y. Times after our pets were poisoned or killed by eating melamine that was labeled as "wheat gluten." Who would have knowingly bought any pet food with a link to China since the quality cannot be verified?

Of course, as our wheat gluten factories had to shut down in the face of cheaper labor in China, some in China found a way to by-pass the labor-intensive extraction of gluten from wheat by using a residue from plastic production instead! The tests show that the product has protein (but not from wheat), and a higher protein count was the goal. Intensive, even very cheap labor could be deleted from the equation.
