14. When my ex used to drag me to church...
I didn't really agree with everything the minister said.

Of course, to be fair, he was boring. Much of his sermon went right over my head. To really grasp what he was saying would ave required a doctorate in theology. Very little he said was truly controversial.

The church we attended did a lot of good work in the community. I had no problems donating money to this church. For example, the church helped migrant workers in our area by providing food, clothing and blankets during the winter months.

I've watched some entire sermons by Rev. Wright and also watched some recent interviews on the news. I found his appearance at the the National Press Club and at the NAACP fascinating and thought provoking. I didn't agree with all his viewpoints but he made some very interesting points.

Had the minister of my church had the fire and charisma and the views of Rev. Wright, I would have found the time I spent in church much more enjoyable. I would have disagreed violently with many of the views he presented, but that wouldn't have stopped me from listening to his sermons. His views would have challenged my own, but would have given me the opportunity to question my own thinking. Growth occurs through the process of evaluating your own assumptions and beliefs.

I feel you can learn something from everyone you meet or watch on TV. Exposing yourself to other ideas can be rewarding and educational. Most people only want to watch those they agree with. I have to admit this is a much simpler approach to life.

So to sum up, had I been in the congregation of Rev. Wrights church, I wouldn't have left merely because I disagreed with him. As long as I felt the church was doing good in the community it served and therefore was a positive influence, I would have continued to attend and enjoy his sermons.
