Election 2008: Obama vs. Giuliani and Thompson

Friday, September 21, 2007

Senator Barack Obama (D) now leads former NYC Mayor Rudy Giuliani (R) 47% to 42% in a hypothetical general-election match-up. The latest Rasmussen Reports national survey of the presidential race also shows Obama leading Republican former Senator Fred Thompson 47% to 41%.

In a September 5 survey, Obama trailed Giuliani by a single point but led Thompson by four points. Rasmussen Reports currently polls on this match-up every other week.

A review of recent trends shows that Obama had enjoyed a “lead” over Giuliani ranging from one point to six points in four of the last five polls conducted by Rasmussen Reports. Prior to that, Giuliani had been on top in eight straight polls conducted from November 2006 through June 2007.

Obama has come out ahead of Thompson in nine of nine match-ups to date.

In other match-ups, Giuliani is virtually tied with Clinton, and trails Edwards. Clinton leads the Democratic nomination race by a wide margin.

Senator Thompson is typically weaker than Giuliani against top Democratic opponents. He doesn't always sweep aside second-tier candidates like Senator Joe Biden or Governor Bill Richardson either. But GOP voters tend to see Thompson as more conservative than "America's Mayor." Giuliani is seen as more electable. A Rasmussen Reports analysis suggests that the race is very fluid and there is no clear frontrunner for the GOP nomination at this time.

Obama leads all Republicans in Rasmussen Reports general election polling.
