221. Dear deacon2
You’re confusing two distinct things. One is election fraud; the other is the possibility of derailing Bush’s second term. The mass psychosis pertains specifically to all of those getting excited about the prospects of the latter.

No, those who believe in Bush’s being elected legitimately are not psychotic, but making conclusions from incomplete information. By no means am minimizing the importance of uncovering and detailing all attempts to steal the election. I agree that is imperative to safeguard 2008. But that is a long and painstaking effort, and not the sort of thing that makes for daily drama.

What I object to is the false hysteria generated here about some possibility of preventing Bush from taking office here. There are those who perpetuate those false hopes, and I am skeptical of their motives. Their motives, however, are nothing compared to the damage it does to us. While we’re distracted by some lunatic notion that the courts are going to overturn the Ohio vote, or a majority of senators will suddenly refuse to certify the results, real events take place. The war continues, funding is misappropriated, the middle class shrinks a little smaller – and here we are awaiting the latest revelation about some hallucinatory vision.

Sorry, folks. Bush will be president for the next four years. The sooner we deal with that the better. And yes, let’s keep pressure on election fraud. But let’s also regain some perspective. That is an issue that will play out in great detail - not the stuff of daily melodrama I’m afraid. Maybe we should all just get back to work.
