Closing the door on the season of warmth and play and moving us into the structured rhythm of the working world, the advent of September brings with it a decided shift in our lives. In the coming days, George Bush will return from his extended dithering in the Crawford playpen to reluctantly encounter a worsening morass of dysfunction and failure of his own creation; Congress will return to the vicious and bloody frontline of the Culture Wars; and Iraq, having missed the memo about summer vacation, will continue as it has been, only worse.
