The Friday after Thanksgiving people thronging to stores, fighting over toys, spending all night in the rain and cold to buy luxury items. Stuffing ourselves with turkey and all the trimmings.

While we are killing, maiming, starving innocents. And taking homes and livelihoods away from so many.

It was the same feeling I had right after 9/11 when America was in shock, grief, fear and the the politicians told us to SHOP SHOP SHOP. It was the American thing to do. The way to deal with our pain was to hit the mall to keep the country financially afloat.

I knew then that there was something really wrong with this country and capitalism.

(I was so disturbed that before I could sit down to Thanksgiving dinner I went to a local grocery story and handed over a big wad of money to the manager, and made her call a poor family I know to tell them to come in and get some groceries. With strict orders not to reveal my identity. Then I came home and ate dinner.)
