When I was 17, I met a fellow who showed me the underlying That which is All Things. I never saw him again in the flesh, but about ten years later I met him, or someone who looked like him, in a dream. That guide worked with me for years, leading me to my spiritual path and my soul mate. In a dream I had lately, he came and showed me his face in a frame-and I realized I was looking at myself in a mirror. So I feel my spirit guide is my Higher Self.

That being said, yes, people who have passed may come back around to help. My grandfather came back to help my mother and grandmother and me at a time of family crisis--and I believe his intervention caused the matter to be resolved quickly.
