PEN/New York Festival of International Literature - Religion and Politics Panel

From the 2006 PEN/New York Festival of International Literature, a panel discussion on the impact of religion on American politics and how it compares to that of other countries around the world. Panelists are Hans Magnus Enzensberger, Alma Guillermoprieto, Moses Isegawa, Elias Khoury and Adam Michnik. The panel is moderated by Robert Silvers of the New York Review of Books.

Robert Silvers is co-editor of the New York Review of Books. He has also been an associate editor of Harper's and translator of La Gangrene. Hans Magnus Enzensberger is the author of such books as "Lighter Than Air: Moral Poems" and "Zig-Zag: The Politics of Culture and Vice Versa." Alma Guillermoprieto is a frequent contributor to the New York Review of Books and the New Yorker. Her latest book is "Dancing With Cuba: A Memoir of the Revolution." Moses Isegawa was born in northern Uganda, the backdrop for his novels "Abyssinian Chronicles" and "Snakepit." Elias Khoury is the editor-in-chief of the cultural supplement of Beirut’s daily An-Nahar, and is a Global Distinguished professor of Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies at NYU. His latest book is "Gate of the Sun." Adam Michnik is a historian, writer and lecturer. Since 1989, he has been the editor-in-chief of Gazeta Wyborcza, Poland’s first independent daily newspaper. Mr. Michnik is the author of "The Church and the Left."
