5. McCain and Rudy have some strengths and weaknesses
Strengths? They are moderate Republicans (or seen as such, at any rate), they can portray themselves as a return to normalcy after the extremism of the Bush Years (not an entirely honest portrayel), and they are the sorts of candidates that moderates and moderate liberals could vote for without feeeling too bad about themselves.

Weaknesses? The base doesn't think much of Rudy and less of McCain. Rudy is pro choice (or was at one point), McCain voted for campaign finance reform and ran against Bush (for which Rush Limbaugh has been castigating him for years). They might not get the extremist vote or the extremist dollar. And if they try to break with the Bush Administration (which they almost surely have to do), they may face some retribution from Administration true believers.
