I would not be the first time for the CIA to foment religious extremism as a means to divide and conquer in order to overthrow some populist nationalist socialist leader so that he can be replaced by some kind of dictator who does have US interests at heart.

Check out Mossadeq, Iran, 1953. It's sufficiently long ago that previously secret govt docs about it have since been released. As someone who has studied those documents remarks:

"If you flip over the rock of American foreign policy of the past century, what crawls out (...) is enough to give imperialism a bad name."
