I've always said that those who want to reduce abortions should focus on reducing unwanted pregnancies. And yet one of the first things BushCo did, upon taking office, was to issue the global "gag" rule, eliminating funding overseas for clinics that even BREATHED the word abortion, or lobbied their own governments for it. (That was reported as "ending funding for overseas abortion," but that's been outlawed for decades.)

Other early BushCo initiatives cut nine different programs that benefitted poor women and children, right out of the gate.

How to stem unwanted pregnancies: Contraception; education; counseling; economic empowerment, etc. -- None of which rightwingers support. (It's all about "abstinence" and "personal responsibility" and "why should I pay for YOUR immorality," etc.).

How to support women who decide to carry their pregnancies to term: Prenatal care, healthcare, childcare, job training, urban renewal, education, etc. -- None of which rightwingers support. (It's all about "Take care of your OWN kids, I happen to WORK for a living, if the schools are bad just shut them down," etc.)

They'd rather pay for the socio-economic issues that result -- they'd always rather build prisons than schools -- and point their sanctimonious, hypcritical fingers in self-righteous condemnation.
