By the time Kerry gave that speech, it had been over two weeks since the SBV had begun their attacks. We (those of us working the phone banks and doing grassroots campaigning) had been attempting to field questions and so-forth for weeks prior to that. Kerry left us hanging. Now, unlike some, I don't think this was due to a lack of courage. I think it was a mistake in judgement. That is, he was either convinced or believed for himself that the lies would blow away on their own.
