made of many colors, shapes, sizes, and orientations. That's how Jacob Riis described it at the dawn of the 20th century. A crazy quilt of humanity, all tightly bound by the land in which we choose to live. He also said we needed to look after each other, that the quilt wouldn't lose its stitching if we cared for one another, and in the caring we'd be certain to keep the individual character of the many disparate parts that together make our crazy quilt.

I wonder if someone like Buchanan will ever understand or appreciate that simple analogy, or if he'll forever chase a muddle of melted men, seeking "freedom" in the willful discarding of individuality and differentiation.
