The candidate tells his chief-of-staff that he's going to start spreading the rumor that his opponent not only frequents the local house of ill-repute, but has also been seen fraternizing in a sexual way with barnyard animals.

"But that's not true!" his chief-of-staff says.

"I know it's not," says the candidate. "I just want to watch the sonofabitch DENY it!"

Much the same dynamic is at work here. Maybe ol' Sam is pulling a double-reverse on Emperor Chucklenutz (who, I have on good authority, does NOT really prowl the streets of D.C. at night looking for infants to sacrifice on DICK Cheney's alter under the Observatory in their nightly Blood Feast -- so stop saying that).
