Canada To Increase Military Presence in the Arctic Despite U.S. Objections [View All]

TORONTO -- Canada has announced plans to increase its Arctic military presence in an effort to assert sovereignty over the Northwest Passage -- a potentially oil-rich region the United States claims is international territory.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper said Monday that six to eight patrol ships will guard what he says are Canadian waters. A deep water port will also be built in a region the U.S. Geological Survey estimates has as much as 25 percent of the world's undiscovered oil and gas.

"Canada has a choice when it comes to defending our sovereignty over the Arctic. We either use it or lose it. And make no mistake, this government intends to use it," Harper said. "It is no exaggeration to say that the need to assert our sovereignty and protect our territorial integrity in the North on our terms have never been more urgent."

"The ongoing discovery of the north's resource riches coupled with the potential impact of climate change has made the region a growing area of interest and concern," Harper said.

Canada also wants to assert its claim over Hans Island, which is at the eastern entrance to the Northwest Passage.

Harper did not name the location of the new port but said it will serve as a naval operating base and for commercial purposes.

So now we will go to war with Canada? Don't wonder now why world governments such as the U.S. and Canada are not doing much to address global warming... they see profit over the misery it will cause in areas not contributing to it. They want the ice to thaw so they can all vie for the wealth it holds so they can drill it, degrade it, pummel it, suck it dry, and kill it like their greed has killed everything else it thas touched.

They don't care about rising sea levels or the devastation, displacement, and disease it will cause for countless millions. They don't care about really doing anything to cure their addiction to oil, just taking control of it for their own purposes and keeping us slaves to it. Make no mistake about it, wars will be perpetual as global warming continues not only because of lack of resources such as water and the effects it is causing such as drought, disease, water shortages, sea level rise, crop devastation, and erratic weather patterns. Oh no, it will be caused by men whose hearts are cold to this Earth and only see it as a place to take from, and they are all morally reprehensible regardless of what country they come from.

And in this country you wait and see, Congress will be giddy about it as they tout it as the way to wean ourselves off of Middle Eastern oil. They won't even care that they would be perpetuating the same misery we have now in a different location. It is only about money, greed, and power to "politicians."

This is why it must be the PEOPLE ENMASSE of this world who join together to cause the seachange necessary to make people understand that for the Arctic to melt would be catastrophic for the Earth's balance. We need to implore businesses to not give into government pressure to destroy this land for profit lest they see it come back to them on their balance sheets as losses, and we need to see that massive global education campaign of Al Gore's take hold in this country like nothing else before in order to make people understand what exactly is at stake here in order to see a massive demand on the part of those of all political stripes to see beyond the political to the moral.

They are already moving their pieces into play... it is time for those who love this planet and see the urgency of this crisis and where it will lead us to checkmate them before it is too late.
