Racial slurs spoil youth trip
A white member is taken into custody after threatening group.
By DEIRDRE CONNER, The Times-Union

A Clay County church was left shaken after a racially charged episode during a Sunday field trip.

A youth group from St. John Missionary Baptist Church of Orange Park was at the bowling alley at the Jacksonville Naval Air Station when an outburst from one of the members forced them to leave and call the police.

The boy, who is white, began bombarding the other kids and leaders with racial slurs and threatened to blow up the bus they rode on, shoot everyone on the trip and burn down the church itself, according to reports from the Clay County Sheriff's Office.

The bizarre confrontation happened during the youth ministry's back-to-school trip. It was the boy's first time with the church group, Pastor C. Edward Preston said Monday.

"Any and all are welcome at the church," he said.
