About receipt checks...

This is the first I've heard of a store checking receipts on anything that wasn't a large/high-value item or a cart full of items. I've bought plenty of games, CDs, and minor items at Best Buy over the years, and never had to have my receipt checked then. That Circuit City clerk was an idiot abusing his authority. Same goes for the cop.

But buy a large item (mini-fridge) or high-value item (laptop), and they damn well do have a right to check your receipt, because it's something that's going to cost the store a lot of money (laptop), or severely shorten their stock (large item-only room for so many of each brand, after all) if a thief brazenly walks off with one .

Common sense, folks, the same way used/rare bookstores will ask for your bag if you bring one in. They don't have a high profit margin, so they have to be careful with even low-value items. Big stores have to be careful with high-value items, but they shouldn't be causing trouble about low-value ones.

The corporation does not have a right to play God, but they don't have a right to get ripped off, either.
