Their absolutism, self righteousness, and general incivility seems to dwarf any claims to compassion. When I think of compassion I think of people like the Dalai Lama or Gandhi, people who were inspired to find peace with their enemies and a better world for other people. OTOH, PETA goes around smearing anybody they don't like for the most minor of "sins", or sometimes, for no good reason at all (in this case, Al Gore).

I'm a vegetarian but I'm not allied with them at all. I don't even consider myself a supporter of animal rights in the academic and popular meaning of the term. Plus, statements PETA have made, like they wouldn't sacrifice one animal if it could cure cancer... are just ridiculous, even inhuman and betrays a rather twisted, cold heart.
