11. Once, the weekend before the 2000 election
This was at a big rally in Waukesha, Wisconsin, in the heart of Sensenbrenner territory. Al and Tipper came, and the vice presidential candidate and his wife. They were doing a bus tour in Wisconsin and were behind schedule, but the crowd was happy to wait far into the evening. We were lucky enough to get places along the walkway that was set up between the street and the speakers' platform in the middle of the park. Dragongentleman and our son both got to shake his hand on his way in, and all three of us again on the way out. I have to say, in that brief moment he was really too tired and distracted to focus on who he was shaking hands with, and understandably so. We tried our best for him in the GOTV over the next two days, and he did win Wisconsin by a few thousand votes. He's the only elected president I've ever had the privilege to shake hands with ... so far.
