17. He feels bad about the wrong thing.
He might get a few "learned his lesson" points if he actually felt bad about the untold thousands of innocents he helped send to their early graves (and the environmental destruction and the loss of cultural & historical treasures), but as I read it, his sorrow is for himself, his family, and his diminished power & effectiveness as a politician.

That particular form of "repentance" is really just a frustrated selfishness. No wonder you got along so well with Nukuhlur George.
