The cops are not here to protect and serve you and me. They are here to protect and serve the status quo. And when those "rednecks and whitey kooks go off," as you put it, whether the cops protect us will depend solely on what they're told to do. And if you don't believe me, you weren't at the FTAA protests in Miami back in 2003. (Google "Miami model" sometime. It was pretty damned horrific.) Police brutality is not necessarily limited to a few bad seeds. When the orders come down from on high to do things a certain way, the police will do it, regardless of whether they're abusing civil rights.
