Carl's Jr. Founder Carl Karcher Dies at 90
Written by Jason Kobely, Internet News Producer

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) -- Carl Karcher, the founder of the Carl's Jr. fast-food chain, died at a Fullerton hospital Friday, five days before what would have been his 91st birthday.

KE Restaurants spokeswoman Beth Mansfield said Karcher died at St. Jude Medical Center in Fullerton. She said Karcher suffered from Parkinson's disease and was being treated for
pneumonia when he died.

Karcher, a deeply religious father of 12, was famous in the fast-food industry for his rags-to-riches story, parlaying a $325 investment in a hot-dog cart into one of the largest hamburger
chains in the West.

The tale was tainted in later years by an insider trading scandal and feuds with his board of directors that led to his eventual demise as chief executive officer.
