5. They will do what they're told -- if history is any guide
The GOP will nominate a certifiably crazy right-winger -- think someone like Alan Keyes. The Dems and the blogoshpere will go apeshit. Everyone will kick and scream and holler. Then, the GOP will admit "defeat" and nominate someone who is only slightly to the right of Clarence Thomas. Everyone will breathe a sigh of relief, the Dems will shoo him on through the nomination process, and run around patting themselves on the back for keeping the wacko guy (who the GOP never wanted anyway) off the bench. They've done it before and it works.
