but when, not even a year later, the ultra-conservative Mohsen Gharavian issued his own opinion on the matter, that statement was blasted from rooftops, worldwide.

Not having near the political power of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, extremist clerics such as Gharavian usually do publicly counter the reform measures he proclaims, to keep any interpretation of the Koran to their liking and prevent the Reformation of Shiite Islam. And Western Media invariably will report on those reactionary fatwas, while totally ignoring any word coming from any modern mullah.
