I would support the public option if not for one thing. Whatever we get this time we'll have for a long time. They will "wash their hands" of health care. "We've done that! Check!" I'm afraid there wouldn't be any "getting there" with a public option. Also, public option could prove to be disastrous with private market marketing tricks and thereby "prove" to some that Single-Payer would be even worse. I really think the private, medicine-for-profit system is vulnerable NOW - maybe for the first,and maybe the last, time.
