Her father was also a US Congresscritter, and a Catholic in the Mel Gibson mode, ie not really a devout Catholic but using it to control the women in his household.

Just one reason I love Gloria Allred, no matter how showboating she can sometimes be: she lambasted his ass for being homophobic and anti-women the whole time he was in Congress, and won a $10 million lawsuit against him for defamation of character (she settled for something like $50,000).
