26. Well, it kind of backfires

The day after Prop H8 passed, there was a "peaceful" rally here in Palm Springs. Some woman with a big styrofoam cross waded right into the crowd of gay folks with her Jesus slogans. As you can imagine, nerves were a little raw and a bunch of people grabbed her cross of hate and broke it.

Then, she became a martyr for the cause -- got interviewed more than she was worth. The police tried their damndest to get her to press charges. And, it gave the fundies a chance to paint the gay community and violent and anti-Christian.

The interesting thing was that in a subsequent interview, the woman said she had nothing against gay people getting married, but that she had been told by her minister that her church could be shut down if Prop H8 didn't pass. That's why she was in favor of it.

The clergy didn't make one argument in favor of Prop H8 that wasn't a lie.
