251. Those who Sow the Wind, Reap the Whirlwind...
Prop. 8 made me more ashamed of my state than anything it had ever done in the past, and this decision, though expected, upsets and angers me. At the same time, I believe that those who thought Prop. 8 was a good idea, the fundies and bigots who imagined that putting an end to gay marriage in CA would put an end to it period, are now realizing that they've reaped the whirlwind.

This is not just because gays, who the Prop. 8 folk assumed would quietly go back to being second class citizens, are angry and willing to boycott and march. This is not just because their friends and families are marching with them, nor because sympathetic straight people are also joining in to fight for their cause. It's because anyone with eyes and a brain in their head is going to realize that if civil rights, equal rights for gays can be voted away so easily, they can be voted away for anyone for any reason.

My interracial marriage was, once upon a time, illegal. I have no doubt, that under the right circumstances, it could be made illegal again if fundies and bigots decided to target it as they've targeted gay marriage. I am not gay, and this doesn't affect my life directly, but it's personal. It's very, very personal. This fight is my fight. If Prop. 8 had not passed, if it had not been upheld today, I'd still be willing to fight, but I might not be ready to go to war. Now I am.

Here comes the whirlwind.
