not necessarily where you were born. As someone else pointed out, SS#'s weren't automatically issued at birth until the 80's. Prior to that, we applied for one in the state we lived in, usually when we got our first job. Hence, I was born in Ohio, grew up in NY, but have a Colorado prefix for my SS#. My kids were all born in late 80's and early 90's, and the have a Colorado prefix.
