Jewish Democratic Group Asks Syndicate to Drop Buchanan

The latest critique of Pat Buchanan's controversial column on Elena Kagan and the number of Jews on the U.S. Supreme Court comes from the National Jewish Democratic Council.

The column, published last week, stated: "If Kagan is confirmed, Jews, who represent less than 2 percent of the U.S. population, will have 33 percent of the Supreme Court seats. Is this the Democrats' idea of diversity?"

The NJDC on Tuesday sent a letter to Creators Syndicate, which distributes Buchanan's column to nearly 200 newspapers, asking the syndicate to drop Buchanan and remove the column.

"We ask that you pull down Buchanan's latest column from your website and that you stop publishing his over-the-top, conspiratorial screeds," the letter says, in part. "During these challenging times, it is more important than ever that we hold ourselves to a higher standard. Help us end the practice of promoting ethnic and religious divisiveness by removing this ugly column today."

Creators declined comment when contacted by Media Matters for America, but said no newspapers have dropped Buchanan since the controversial column was distributed. It declined to say how many newspapers had run that specific column.
