Most of my friends (me included) would pick the paddlings over ISS, because ISS was worse. We didn't have a choice though.

ISS was like staying all tensed up all day long for 3 to 5 days straight. They made you sit perfectly quiet in ISS where I'm from.

The paddling, on the other hand, was over after they hit you a few times. Then you could go on with your life until the next paddling. You get used to the paddlings even though they do hurt. Most children I knew who grew up with paddlings/beatings just did what we wanted to anyhow, because we knew the beatings would be there if we were guilty or not. Paddling is definitely not a deterrent. That much, I know for sure. It's just a way for adults to get their frustrations out and it's legal to hit kids where I live.

We always closed our eyes and mock prayed for the paddlings over ISS.

OSS was a whole different story. We'd DEFINITELY rather have that than ISS or the paddlings.
