Republicans are going to lose in 2012 anyway, from the top of the ticket down. So from McCain's perspective, why not have Sarah as the GOP standard bearer? She can go rogue to her heart's content, calling the shots every step of the way. And when the crushing defeat happens in November, he can sit back and gloat a bit as Palin heads off into the sunset for the very last time.
